What She Wanted

Known for the fresh and well-edited design sensibility she brings to her lifestyle site Apt 34, Erin Hiemstra appreciates the beauty of smart spaces.

In the midst of a home renovation journey, Erin came to California Closets to create her dream pantry. Working with design consultant Paige Gordon, Erin wanted a modern, functional space with details that reflected the old-world charm of her Victorian home.

Working within an old home, we wanted to maintain a lot of the historic elements while optimizing really small spaces and packing as much in as possible. I'm a big cook so I really wanted a fantastic pantry, and the only way to do that was with California Closets.

How we did it

Faced with a narrow room and tall ceilings, Paige optimized vertical space to give Erin her must-haves: a cookbook display and storage for fruits, veggies, and wine. She designed floor-to-ceiling cabinets for one wall to face floating shelves sourced by Erin. The countertops were installed slightly higher than standard height to accommodate Erin and her husband, both tall, and at varying depths to respect the room’s original molding.

My exposed cookbook wall is a favorite because I can see the cover of every cookbook. I have drawers for vegetables and fruits, and pull-out baskets for linens and towels. It’s probably the most functional space in my entire house.

Final Result

Erin’s warm, accessible, and welcoming pantry illustrates simplicity at its best and shows the potential for a utilitarian storage space. Careful attention to detail and seamless professional organizing from NEAT Method makes it a design Erin and her family can appreciate and enjoy for years to come.

My pantry definitely is the pièce de résistance of our house. You wouldn't expect to have a walk-in pantry in an old home. It is the absolute wow factor of my kitchen.
