After Tammie and Phil Borders’ three kids moved out of their five-bedroom suburban home, they decided to start fresh and downsize to a two-bedroom duplex. They were eager for less space to maintain, but still needed enough space for their grown children to stay for visits. To figure out how to make a two-bedroom home function as three, Tammie called California Closets Indianapolis and worked with design consultant Merrick McGraw to come up with the ideal solution.
We needed help with a design that would be clean, fresh, simple, and fit our new lifestyle. And definitely low-maintenance.
Once Merrick heard Tammie and Phil’s dilemma, she knew the answer: outfitting the home’s study with a wall bed, effectively doubling its function as a guest room. Furthermore, Merrick designed built-in cabinetry to surround the wall bed, creating storage for guests’ belongings, extra linens, and office supplies. Above the wall bed, open shelving provides a display space for objects and decor, ensuring the space feels sophisticated whether acting as a guest room or study.
Phil BordersWe didn’t need a full extra bedroom, just an extra bedroom once in a while. And now we have this instant extra bedroom that can be assembled in five minutes.
A double-duty room that works as Tammie’s office five days a week and an extra bedroom whenever their children or guests come for a visit. Completed with streamlined aluminum finger pulls and neutral finishes, the full unit blends seamlessly with the home’s contemporary, urban aesthetic.
